The FNP track at UTMB equiped us with academic knowledge and clinical skills necessary for health promotion, disease prevention, counseling and teaching functions, assessment and management of acute and chronic conditions. Clinical preceptorship bridges academic knowledge and practice, and allows us to obtain extended clinical experiences in primary and acute care settings. In clinical settings I worked with preceptors to develop the skills necessary for the nurse practitioner role. It is an intense educational program with extended clinical experience and on campus learning sessions.

My rotation at UTMB clinic was maternal and pediatric care. The women's clinical rotation was an opportunity to learn women specific assessment and interventional strategies including breast exam, pap smears, and obstetrical care. The focus on the pediatric rotation was immunization practices, childhood illnesses, and preventive care.
Medical Colleagues of Texas Family clinic takes care of patients with acute and chronic diseases in all age groups. In this family practice environment, my preceptor guided me with interpreting diagnostic results, implementing care plans, and motivating patients to participate in their own care plan. We focused on cost effective care and used referral services as needed.

During my final semester all the learned experience and theory was integrated into action. I saw a wide variety of patients from health promotion in family practice to acutely ill emergency room patients. I also became proficient with emergency room procedures like sutures, incision and drainage, and lumbar punctures. Collaboration with the ER attending physician was ongoing.
